Analog Africa - 7/7 - Gwdihw, Cardiff

Samy’s first DJ set in Cardiff!

For a decade now, Samy Ben Redjeb’s seminal Analog Africa label has been unearthing the best in both explosive foot-shufflers and hypnotic sauntering treasures from Africa.

It’s achieved more than most in celebrating the rich and diverse heritage of a much misunderstood and overlooked continent.

Samy has spared nothing in his pursuit of choosing authentic and eye-opening choice records. His lifestyle and string of various jobs… from a Life Aquatic sojourn as a diving instructor in Senegal to a stint as a Lufthansa flight attendant crisscrossing the Lagos-Addis Ababa-Accra arc and beyond have all been centered on a passion for crate digging.

Children Of Zeus!
Manchester’s finest purveyors of Hip-Hop Soul come to the intimate setting of Gwdihw fresh from a summer of gaining acolades at international festivals and playing alongside Jehst, Shabazz Palaces, The Abstract Orchestra does Madvillainy, and Black Star (Mos Def and Kweli)

“The Story So Far…” on First Word records is their debut EP, an aural map of their musical journey since being respectively part of Broke’N’English, and providing the soulful vocals gracing tracks by Caron Wheeler, Goldie and more.
If you don’t yet know, you will

We’re honoured to be able to host them, and have assembled a support line-up worthy of the event.

Charismatic baritone frontman of Afro Cluster, contributor to tracks by The Allergies, Cut La Vis, and with his own solo back catalogue, Skunkadelic brings the best of the highs and none of the lethargy of his namesake

Dirty Alex (Sound System Set)
We’ve negotiated that Dirty Alex can send the same fire breathing contingent that blew up The Hold Up stage at Hub Fest this summer - a trio of MCs working as one party starting leviathan. Their strong jazz influence with pedigree hip-hop has both tinges of golden era and an undeniable futurism

Alfie Swan
DJ, Beatsmith, and standard bearer for Cardiff electronic music makers, Alfie’s selection and delivery could be defined by the term heavy soul - if even a made up genre could restrict him! Classics and exclusives galore.

It began in Venezuela 30 years ago – filling suitcases with amazing latin records to bring back to Europe. And it continued ever since; private warehouse visits in the US, dusty back street basements in South America, houses and garages in Africa, and lesser-known spots in Europe and Asia.

Now in it’s 9th year, Soundwave returns to the magical Garden Tisno where kindred spirits flock to experience one of Europe’s most life-affirming festivals packed full of music, art, film and good vibes.

The tranquil location of Soundwave offers an energising setting where by day your ears are massaged by soothing beats & hip-hop, reggae & dub, blissful world & electronic rhythms, jazz and soul-drenched funk & disco all performed and selected masterfully by some of the worlds best musicians and DJ’s. As the sun sets and day enters night, the intoxicating atmosphere builds into an evening of electric live performances and late night DJ sets packed full of world dance floor grooves, soulful bangers, hypnotic drum and bass & broken beat as well as anything else that fits in with the festivals eclectic musical spectrum.

As always, the (in)famous Soundwave boat parties will be frequently in and out of dock and the hedonistic late night open air club sessions return, all hosted by some of Europe’s prestige club nights. Having been one of the highlights of last year’s festival, we’ll yet again be commissioning some of our favourite artists to transform The Garden into an even more visually stunning setting. When the time comes to energise once more, we have regular film screenings and yoga classes across the five days plus much more

Typesun Live w/ DJ Miles Day (The Sure Shot) 28-01-17

Cosmogramma are delighted to welcome an extremely rare live show from the Jazz informed, dance-floor tempting compositions of Typesun at the final night of Independent Venue Week 2017.

Bristol based Luke Harney is the centre around which the textural, orchestral, jazz tinged Electronica of Typesun falls - coming to attention with crossover Neo-Soul such as ‘The PL’, marked by fractured emotional vocals as much as lo-fi Disco bass licks.

Since, he’s taken time over gems of releases, with February’s ‘Make It Right’ a clearly honed and perfected piece of dancefloor enigmatism, “Eastern orchestral lick and terse cello riff send your anticipation off in one direction, only to have the ice-cool disco core of the track neatly step out of a side alley and send your body in a whole other direction.”

With production acrobatics that come magically alive in person, expect a stunning live show at Gwdihw, with Sure Shot & Fat City DJs playing Jazzy Electronic-Disco cuts until late.

Habibi Funk // John Stapleton // Gwdihw // Cardiff // 12-11-16

Habibi Funk is a label and platform for funky/soulful and/or psych influenced music from the Arab world of the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Facebook event

Jannis of Jakarta Records got to travel a lot in north Africa in the last years thru touring with Blitz The Ambassador and a studio session with Oddisee and Olof Dreijer of The Knife for the “Sawtuha” project in Tunisia. While being there he did some record digging and found some incredible music from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Since then he went to Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt searching for records. It’s incredible to see how the music of these days seem to be the opposite of the very stereotypical idea of the “the Arab world” mainstream media portrays way too often.

Some of the music has zero info on the net, was never sold on ebay and has not been “rediscovered” by a wider audience yet, while others are somewhat classics in the field of “Arabic groove“. Up to date Jannis has done 4 mixes of said music, that have been prominently featured by sites such as The Guardian, Okayplayer, Wax Poetics and many more.

Playing original and incredibly rare vinyl, Jannis’ DJ sets are a unique blend of funky sounds from Sudan, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon and the European Arabic diaspora.

+ John Stapleton (Wanted Records)

John has been collecting records and DJing for longer than he cares to remember. He’s compiled 15 LPs for labels React and Harmless, dabbled in music production and his own record labels, and played records in clubs and festivals from Iceland to Australia.

Previously behind such seminal Bristol clubs as Def Con, The Cooker, Vision and BlowPop, he currently plays at two regular nights in Bristol – Go, Go Children and Easton Standard Time – playing funk, soul and reggae music, all on original vinyl releases, and can be found at festivals from WOMAD to Glastonbury as well as guest spots at discerning nights up and down the country.

A Tribute To Paradise Garage

A Tribute To Paradise Garage - Saturday 9th July - Gwdihw, Cardiff

We pay homage to New York’s most legendary nightclub and resident DJ, Larry Levan.

Originally, the ‘disco’ scene was far from a homogeneous, definable form. It was anything people would dance to: rock, Latin, soul, funk, rhythm and blues. It was a small, close-knit world and the dancers’ togetherness, their sense of redemption, their feelings of escape from a racist and homophobic reality. More than anything, disco was driven by an underground idea of unity.

Larry Levan was an early child of this scene. He danced in its clubs, he learnt from its originators, and he joined a growing band of DJs who were filling New York with thrilling, loving music. And later, in his own club, The Paradise Garage (as mainstream disco was declared dead in the late 70s) he took it underground, nurtured and developed it and allowed it to take its first steps as something new.

Paradise Garage at 84 King Street, in Hudson Square, NYC operated from 1977 to 1987. It was one of the few clubs in New York which the gay, and predominantly African-American and Latino, patrons could genuinely call their own. The Garage was a place for people that were not accepted in society, a place from them to be free, to be who they are.

House music as a genre has origins with Larry Levan and his contemporaries, Frankie Knuckles and Nicky Siano. These DJs played all kinds of music. The Garage shaped club culture as we know it today. As well as DJs, artists also performed there, including: Grace Jones, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, Karen Young, Colonel Abrams and more. Some famous acts like Gwen Guthrie actually started their careers on that stage.

One thing was never in doubt: this was where you found the city’s most devoted clubbers: kids who danced for seven, eight hours, or more every week. They knew the records that were played, they screamed with excitement for their favourites. There was no attitude at The Garage, no cliques defined by their muscles, no fashion victims, no A-list. These people were dancers and this is what made the atmosphere so electrifying – it was driven by the energetic input of its clubbers. The intensity of the disco pyrotechnics was unlike anything anywhere. Venturing onto the dance floor was like swimming into an undertow – you were sucked into the vortex, and you surrendered, for hours at a time.

DJs: Dave Little (Melange), Andy Rich (Blue Honey), Van Pelt (Rotary Club) and Miles Day (Sure Shot) select their favourite Paradise Garage and Larry Levan cuts - all night long
